Today is a special day. It’s my dad’s birthday.
He’s a good guy. He has a big heart. Everyone loves my dad. He taught me to whistle (before I could talk), how to wink, and how to tie my shoes. He loves my mom and she loves him. Family means the world to him. He’s generous and likes to spoil his kids and grand-kids.
When I called home crying that I wanted to come home from boot camp, I later learned when he hung up the phone, he was crying too. He urged me to stick it out and I did it. Graduating from Marine Corps Basic Training was a huge accomplishment for me and I did it with the encouragement of my dad.
He knows everything about tools and loves old cars and planes. My dad can do anything. From fixing a leaky faucet to hanging shelves, pictures, blinds, light fixtures, and mirrors; always, always making sure everything is level and plumb. He can make things from his own plans… he’s going to make us matching work benches (yay!). He’s patient and honest and supportive. He’s taught and given me so much.
My dad worked his butt off all his life to provide for us. For all his sacrifices, I am humbled and thankful. He retired a couple years ago and now he and my mom spend lots of time together: going on road trips, walking together, and hitting an occasional casino. He deserves every happiness and all the goodness his heart desires.
Happy birthday, Dad!
